Introduction

The Department of English Teaching, established in August 2000, is one of the five colleges recognized by the Ministry of Education to train pre-service teachers for elementary school. Providing elementary schools with high-quality English teachers is the goal of this department.
We now have nine staff teachers: two associate professors, four assistant professors, one instructor, and two American teachers. For them, both instructing students and doing research are important. Our instructors attend national and international conferences; publish papers; apply for National Science Council Project grants, and hold academic conferences on linguistics and literature. In addition, they are also responsible for in-service teacher professional development in Eastern Taiwan.
Our department puts emphasis both on theory and practice. Language laboratories and a multi-media computer-based classroom are available for efficient learning. Students have both required and elective courses in linguistics, literature, and education. Students pursuing careers as elementary school teachers take courses in education, and complete 148 credits, while only 128 credits are necessary for graduation without educational courses. Since most of the students here are future elementary school English teachers, courses are designed to help them develop English teaching skills. Students are trained to learn and practice a wide variety of both traditional and modern teaching methods.
In addition to teaching skills, courses at NHLTC also equip students with the skills to engage in new English-related jobs such as interpreting, translation and English secretarial work. The English Teaching department welcomes students from all around Taiwan and from overseas. We offer students a warm and friendly learning environment on a beautiful campus on Taiwan's scenic east coast.
